November is Picture Book Month

Picture Book month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book.  Come celebrate with picture book favorites selected especially for you by the North Bellmore Library staff!

GASTON by Kelly DiPucchio, with  pictures by Christian Robinson

   

Nature or nurture?  Gaston, born into a family of fancy french poodles, looks and acts different.  His coiffure, bark, and demeanor need work.  His ears stick up, not down; he ruffs instead of yaps, slobbers instead of sips.  Mrs. Poodle and her daughters Fi-Fi, Foo-Foo, and Ooh-La-La love him just the same.  The pictures are delightful, celebrating each dog's expressive personality.  Kids who might feel the odd man out in their own families will take heart from this.

PICNIC  by John Burningham

John Burningham returns with his trademark sketchy pictures with dappled marker coloring, establishing a sunny tone that is perfect for a day in the countryside.  In this new book, a boy and girl prepare a picnic lunch and set out to eat it.  Along the way they meet Sheep, Pig, and Duck and the comedy begins.   The interactive hunt-and-seek game adds to the fun of the story.

Over the moon ...

...at storytime.

Children ages 5-8 years were treated to a storytime out of this world today!  Storytime began with a reading of Margaret Wise Brown's book Goodnight Moon.  The boys and girls had lots of fun and learned many new facts about the moon.  Did you know that luna is moon in Spanish?  Did you know that Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon?  And we discovered the moon is not made of cheese!

                       
                           

We played a great moon memory game and finished with making moon pillows while listening to moon music! Everyone had a great time.
