Celebrate Children's Book Week with the North Bellmore Library!

Join the North Bellmore Library as we celebrate the 95th annual Children's Book Week, May 12-18, 2014!  Our young patrons may cast their vote for their favorite author and their favorite illustrator of the year by clicking here.

The Children's Choice Book Awards (CCBA) is the only national book awards program where winning titles are selected by children.  Last year, over 1,000,000 votes were cast by young readers!

This year marks the 7th Annual Children's & Teen Choice Book Awards!  From now until Monday, May 12, 2014, children will be able to vote at ccbookawards.com for their favorite author, illustrator, and book of the year.

The award program was created in 2008 to provide young readers with an opportunity to voice their opinions about the books being written for them and to help develop a reading list that will motivate children to read more and cultivate a love of reading.

LEGOS AT THE LIBRARY

The Lego Masters Club was a huge hit for boys and girls in grades 3 and up.  In fact, we practically had to kick them out each week when the session ended!  Why Legos in the library? Children came for 4 weeks of building and mechanical fun, and worked on their scientific and mathematical reasoning skills in the process.  Also, promoting creative play contributes to literacy development by increasing attention span, memory, and language and vocabulary skills. Play can be educational!

Everyone shared their creativity at the showcase pictured below.  For the finale, the children collaborated on  a demolition derby  to end this session of  Lego Masters. Join us over the summer to create robots and rockets, as part our Summer Reading Club theme, FIZZ BOOM READ!

The Ants Go Marching One By One, Hurrah! Hurrah!

BUGS STORYTIME

Storytime was all about Bugs this week.   The children enjoyed picture books  such as I love Bugs by Emma Dodd, and The Big Bug Book, a pop-up book by David Carter.

Morning Program

We enjoyed making our bug magnet craft, and wearing our bug antennae.  However, our favorite activity was marching like ants, while singing the old time favorite,  The Ants Go Marching One By One, Hurrah!  Hurrah!

Morning Program

Afternoon Program

We ended  with a picnic for the little ants, and  for the children as well! Since April is National Poetry Month, we read Step Gently Out by Helen Frost, and Face Bug, poems by J. Patrick Lewis, while enjoying a snack.  The children were fascinated by the beautiful photographs of bugs. We all agreed that bugs are interesting creatures, but we'd prefer if they didn't come to our next picnic!
